HIGHLIGHTS
Mardiros Merigian immigrated to the United States before the Genocide to work in a coal mine in Texas, and on the railroad. His first wife and two of his three children were killed by Turkish soldiers. The remaining son, Nishan Merigian, went to live with a poor Turkish farmer. Mardiros then married Eva Melikian, a cousin. She and Onnik Melikian, another cousin, were instrumental in finding Nishan and bringing him to the United States. Mardiros spent some time in Springfield, Massachusetts, where Onnik and his family lived, and some time in Williamson, West Virginia, where Mariam Melikian ran a restaurant with her husband Sarkis Davitian and their family. Mardiros was known as "Mike Ami" to Onnik's children.
