FIRST COUSINS

You have grandparents in common

 

 

SECOND COUSINS

You have great-grandparents in common

 

 

THIRD COUSINS

You have great-great grandparents in common

 

 

FOURTH COUSINS

You have great-great-great grandparents in common

 

 

FIFTH COUSINS

You have great-great-great-great grandparents in common

 

 

COUSINS ONCE REMOVED

You are cousins, but there is a one-generation difference between you.  For example, your father's first cousin is your first cousin once removed. 

 

 

COUSINS TWICE REMOVED

There is a two-generation difference between you.  For example, your grandfather's first cousin is your first cousin twice removed. 

 

 

COMBINATIONS OF LEVELS AND REMOVES

Any combination can be made and described.

 For example, your mother's second cousin would be your second cousin once removed.
